Science & Research Majors Related to the Environment

Scientists are interested in learning more about the world and how it works. They ask questions and conduct experiments in the lab and in the field. They may also use data and modeling to make predictions about future events.

There are many different types of scientists. A scientist may be interested in living organisms such as plants, animals, or bacteria (biologists), or in how these organisms interact with one another or with their environment (ecologists). Other scientists may be more interested in understanding the physical aspects of our planet, such as its structure and composition (geologists), position in the universe (astronomers), or weather and climate (atmospheric scientists). Some scientists focus their attention on a specific ecosystem, such as oceans or rainforests. Others may be more interested in systems or processes that extend across ecosystems. The research of all of these scientists comes together to give us a better understanding of our planet and its processes and inhabitants.
